CASED SIREN/ FOG HORNPortable emergency ship's cased siren/ fog horn. This hand-powered fog horn produces a very loud ear piercing sound, used in case of failure of the ship's electrically powered fog horn. As stated by a sign on this boxed instrument, 33 cranks of the handle fully charges the system, then by moving a lever, the huge sound bursts out. It could be heard 1.5 miles away. The unit is made of light weight aluminum, and can be easily stored within the case, which measures 12 1/2" h x 9 1/2" wide x 20 3/4" long; completely revarnished, ready to be proudly displayed in your nautical room (great for parties). It is plenty old, as is apparent from its rusty condition. It's actually very decorative in its present condition! The top of the unit is marked: "catch only to be lifted while winding in." Below that: the Kelvite Merchant Pattern, Sounding Machine, Kelvine & Wilfred O White Co., Sole Makers, Boston USA. Sounding Machine No W 2006. Below that: caution to release brake one turn only.
