#0393 U. S. Navy Masthead Light

U. S. NAVY WW II MASTHEAD LIGHT

Because the light was positioned on top of the mast, making it hard to reach to replace a bulb during battle conditions, and if some burned out the others carried on! Polished and lacquered. U.S.S HUGH W.HADLEY (DD 774) "1945- BRASS DESTROYER HELM / WHEEL STATION

MUSEUM QUALITY!

Impeccable provenance comes with this MUSEUM Quality nautical/ maritime collectors item. On the morning of May 11, 1945, this valiant ship was attacked for a period of one hour and twenty minutes by 23 Kamikaze enemy planes off OKINAWA! She succeeded in DESTROYING 20 of these planes single handed before 3 Kamikaze planes succeeded in putting her completely out of action. She was then towed into port where temporary repairs sufficient to make her seaworthy were accomplished, and was then towed to the West Coast where she was put out of commission. It's Steering Station's brass Wheel/Helm with Wood round was engraved with its historic battle accomplishments and presented to Skipper and Crew of M.S BEAR of Oakland by : U S. Navy, April 11, 1948. History: The "Hadley," a new 2,200-ton destroyer, built by Bethlehem Steel Corporation at San Pedro, CA. Commissioned on November 25, 1944, lived for just a little more than one year to it's decommissioning at Hunter's Point Naval dry docks in San Francisco on December 15,1945.

After several years of experience and upon being invited to participate, a Chief Petty officer, Senior Chief Petty Officer, or Master Chief Petty officer (E7, E8, E9) can undergo evaluation to become a Master Diver. Upon selection by the board of peers and successful completion of all areas of diving expertise, he is then awarded the designation of Master Diver. In the Navy awards and decorations manual, the Master diver pin is silver and the officer pin Gold. Our brass plaque represents both. Depicts a hard hat deep sea diving helmet flanked by two sea horses, with tridents sprouting at port and starboard from the top of the bonnet. Measures 6" in diameter and weighs 2.3 lbs.
