U.S.S HUGH W.HADLEY (DD 774) "1945- BRASS DESTROYER HELM / WHEEL STATIONMUSEUM QUALITY!Impeccable provenance comes with this MUSEUM Quality nautical/ maritime collectors item. On the morning of May 11, 1945, this valiant ship was attacked for a period of one hour and twenty minutes by 23 Kamikaze enemy planes off OKINAWA! She succeeded in DESTROYING 20 of these planes single handed before 3 Kamikaze planes succeeded in putting her completely out of action. She was then towed into port where temporary repairs sufficient to make her seaworthy were accomplished, and was then towed to the West Coast where she was put out of commission. It's Steering Station's brass Wheel/Helm with Wood round was engraved with its historic battle accomplishments and presented to Skipper and Crew of M.S BEAR of Oakland by : U S. Navy, April 11, 1948. History: The "Hadley," a new 2,200-ton destroyer, built by Bethlehem Steel Corporation at San Pedro, CA. Commissioned on November 25, 1944, lived for just a little more than one year to it's decommissioning at Hunter's Point Naval dry docks in San Francisco on December 15,1945.
