SYKES HYDROMETER BY BUSS OF LONDON
This exceptional hydrometer by Buss of London is displayed in a finely inlaid mahogany box which reads: “SYKES-HYDROMETER -BUSS-48 Hutton Garden-London”. The box is inlaid with two lions holding a royal shield above their heads. The 7” brass float and its complete set of 10 weights are all serial numbered 26980 and marked with the makers name BUSS. This instrument was used to determine the specific gravity of liquids. The ships master used this to test the salinity of the seawater. These vessels would travel from cold Northern waters to warm tropical waters where the ships buoyancy to help maneuver and know how much they could load the ship. A very fine item for your collection.
